The computer environment required to use this program is as follows; DOS Version 3.3 or later Monitor EGA/VGA or compatible Option Mouse; Microsoft(R) Mouse Driver or compatible driver must be installed. (You can also operate this program with the keyboard only.) 2. This program works in the environment where your printer is directly connected to your computer. If there is a printer buffer switch which does not support bi- directional communications between the printer and computer, it cannot work in bi-directional mode. It can still work in the PC to printer direction. This allows normal printing but does not allow printer status read back. 3. It cannot work with printers on a network. 4. It sometimes cannot work with some applications. In that case, try to execute it after ending the application. 5. It can work in the DOS-compatible box screen mode of Windows. However, it is recommended that you completely exit from Windows to DOS before using this program. 6. The Status Monitor of this program and some other terminate-stay-resident programs cannot co-exist in computer memory. If they don't work properly together, use only the one terminate-stay- resident program that you require. You can suspend the Status Monitor with any of the following methods: úType STMX/r and press the \ key to remove the resident Status Monitor úKeep pressing the space bar while the AUTOEXEC.BAT file runs at DOS startup so as not to make the status monitor resident in memory. <4> Function \[Function\] 1.When this program starts, the Current Printer Information box appears to show the current status, settings and available RAM capacity of the printer. If this program cannot run in the bi- directional mode, the computer cannot get information from the printer so the current status and RAM capacity of the printer cannot be displayed. In this case the default printer settings - not the current printer settings - are displayed. 2.If necessary, you can change printer settings in the Current Printer Information box. Select any current or default setting with the Cursor Up or Down key and press the \ Key, so that the setting menu appears to allow you to change the setting. You should refer to the User guide book for complete instructions. <20> Toner Empty \[[Cause]\] There is no toner present in the toner cartridge. This disables the printer to prevent damage to the developer drum unit. \[[Action]\] You should open the printer, remove the empty toner cartridge and carefully insert a new toner cartridge. You should refer to the User guide book for complete instructions. <21> 300 dpi Printing (for X) \[[Status]\] Your document is printed at 300 dpi because of insufficient memory. \[[Action]\] Set the page protection to AUTO and try again. If the error occurs again, expand the memory by adding a commercially available SIMM or reduce the complexity of your document. <22> Memory Full (for X) \[[Cause]\] The memory of the printer has reached its full capacity and cannot process any more data. This may be due to too many soft fonts or complex graphics loaded in the printer memory. \[[Action]\] You should press the FF/Cont key to print any transferred data there may be within the printer memory. Then take either, simplify the print job or expand the memory by adding SIMM. There might be a case that turning PAGE PROTECT off eliminates this error. <23> Print Overrun (for X) \[[Cause]\] The printer has not processed all the data before starting to print and therefore has misprinted. For example, you may have tried to send a graphic that is too complicated to the printer. \[[Action]\] You should press the FF/Cont key to print any transferred data and then should reduce the complexity of the print job. Then resend the data to the printer for printing. Another solution is to expand the printer memory and set PAGE PROTECT to A4, Letter or Legal. <100> DIRECT ACCESS \[Direct Access\] By selecting from the functions within DIRECT ACCESS, you can carry out certain tasks in a quick and simple manner. These are functions which may be used frequently, and therefore, to save time and for ease-of- use, can be executed by accessing the printer directly. The functions available within direct access are : > > > > <200> PRINTER SETUP \[Printer Setup\] In order to set up the printer, you must set various functions to suit the print job application. The following functions are available within Printer Setup : > > > > > > <300> CONSOLE CONFIG \[Console Config\] Console Config sets the general configuration of this program. Within Console Config, the following functions are available : > > <400> Paper Feed \[Paper Feed\] This function determines the paper path for the page to be printed. You must select either MANUAL or SHEET FEEDER. If you select MANUAL, place paper on the manual paper feeder. If you select SHEET FEEDER, make sure that there is paper, of the required size, in the paper cassette tray. <101> PRINT FORM \[Print Form\] Using this function, you can directly print a previously designed form file. If you have designed a form using your application software and have saved it as a print file, then you can quickly and easily print it using this function. You simply select the required form, from the list of available form files, to enable printing. <102> SELF PRINT \[Self Print\] Using this function, you can directly print various pages of information which are resident inside the printer. Using this function, you can select to : > > > > <103> Print Demo Page \[Print Demo Page\] You can print a demonstration page, which is resident inside the printer, by selecting this function through direct access. <104> Test Print \[Test Print\] You can print a test page, which is resident inside the printer, by selecting this function through direct access. <105> Print Resident Fonts \[Print Resident Fonts\] You can print a sample of the resident fonts, which are inside the printer, by selecting this function through direct access. <106> Print Download Fonts \[Print Download Fonts\] You can print a sample of the permanent downloaded fonts, which are currently being stored inside the printer, by selecting this function through direct access. <107> Print Config \[Print Config\] You can print a list of the current printer configuration settings by selecting this function through direct access. <108> RESET PRINTER \[Reset Printer\] By selecting this function, you can reset the printer and restore the printer to the current user settings. You will need to reset the printer when an error has disabled the printer. <109> SLEEP \[Sleep\] By selecting this function you can send the printer to sleep immediately, rather than having to wait for the AUTO SLEEP TIME OUT to elapse. In Sleep mode, the printer is in a low power consumption state. <201> PRINT SETUP \[Print Setup\] In order to use the printer with a particular application, you must set various printer functions to suit the print job application. PRINT SETUP involves the setting of the following functions : > > > > > > > <202> PAGE SETUP \[Page Setup\] In order to use the printer with a particular application, you must set various printer functions to suit the print job application. PAGE SETUP involves the setting of the functions which determine the basic layout of the page. If you are using your printer with application software which automatically sends setting values to the printer, the values from the application software will be valid, except for the X Offset and Y Offset settings. Within PAGE SETUP you can set the following functions : > > > > > > > > > <203> FONT CONFIG \[Font Config\] In order to use the printer with a particular application, you must set various printer functions to suit the print job application. If you are using your printer with application software which automatically sends setting values to the printer, the values from the application software will be valid. FONT CONFIG involves the setting of the following functions, which determine the style of the print: > > > <204> PRINTER CONFIG \[Printer Config\] In order to use the printer with a particular application, you must set various printer functions to suit the print job application. PRINTER CONFIG involves the setting of the following functions: > > > > > <205> OTHER CONFIG \[Other Config\] In order to use the printer with a particular application, you must set various printer functions to suit the print job application. OTHER CONFIG involves the setting of the functions which affect the print position such as line feed, carriage return etc. You can set the following functions: > > > > > > <206> FILE \[File\] You can use this function to send, load and save settings related to the printer setup to a file. Within FILE you can select from: > > > > > <210> Copy \[Copy\] This determines the number of copies of each sheet which will be printed by the printer. You can set this number between 1 and 200. <211> Resolution \[Resolution\] Resolution refers to the number of dots per inch. You must select a resolution of 300dpi, or 600dpi where this is available on your printer. This should be selected to suit the resolution of the files you are printing. In some cases, when a high resolution has been selected and there is limited printer memory, the printer may not be able to print a large file. The higher the resolution and the larger the file size, the more memory is required. <212> Quality \[Quality\] ECONOMY mode has a lower print density and therefore uses less toner and reduces the cost per page. NORMAL mode prints at the selected print density. <213> Page Protect \[Page Protect\] Most print jobs can be executed with PAGE PROTECTION set to OFF. However, if the print images are too complex, (e.g. complicated graphics and a lot of downloaded data) the printer may lose data and print only part of the page. In this case the message PRINT OVERRUN will appear. By setting this function to on, such a scenario may be avoided as the page protect feature allow the printer to create the image to be printed in memory before physically moving the paper through the printer. Auto Page Protect does not require the additional memory. However, if you get the "PRINT OVERRUN", expand the printer memory and set Page Protect to A4, Letter or Legal. If you get the "MEMORY FULL", turn the Page Protect OFF and try again. NOTE: At 300dpi, Legal setting is only available if the memory in the printer has been expanded to more than 3 Mbytes. At 600dpi, A4,Letter or Legal settings are only available if the memory in the printer has been expanded to more than 6 Mbytes. If there is not enough memory installed in the printer, your document may be printed at 300 dpi. <214> Emulation \[Emulation\] The printer is capable of emulating a number of different printers. The emulation that you choose will primarily depend on the application software that you are using. AUTO emulation is an option which allows the printer to switch between emulation modes automatically when data is received. If AUTO emulation does not work with your application, you should select the appropriate emulation. When AUTO emulation has been selected, the following two settings are available: > > <215> Auto Emulation Time Out \[Auto Emulation Time Out\] This setting is available when AUTO emulation has been selected. This is the time period during which the printer will not allow another automatic emulation change. You can set this time out in the range of 1-99 seconds in units of 1 second. <216> FX/XL Priority \[FX/XL Priority\] This setting is available when AUTO emulation has been selected. As the printer cannot distinguish between the Epson and IBM emulations, you must select the priority for the printer between Epson FX or IBM XL emulation when using the auto emulation mode. <217> Auto FF \[Auto FF\] Sometimes, unprinted data may remain inside the printer. The auto form feed function allows you to decide whether or not this page should be automatically printed and ejected from the printer. If the auto form feed is set to ON, the printer will automatically print out the data after the time out has elapsed. If the auto form feed is selected to OFF and data remains inside the printer, the DATA lamp will come on and you must send a form feed command, or press the FF/Cont switch in order for the remaining data to be printed out. Within the auto form feed function, the > setting is available. <218> Auto FF Time Out \[Auto FF Time Out\] This setting is available when Auto Form Feed has been selected. It is the time period before the printer will generate an automatic form feed. You can set it within the range of 1-99 seconds in units of 1 second. For example, when the time-out is set at 5 seconds, the printer will perform a form feed 5 seconds after data has remained in the printer and no further data is received. <219> FF Suppress \[FF Suppress\] Sometimes, pages containing no print data are fed through the printer. (e.g. some software applications automatically feed a blank page through the printer between print jobs). By selecting the FF Suppress function to ON, the printing of such blank pages will be prevented. <220> Paper Size \[Paper Size\] As the paper cassette tray is a universal size, there are various cut sheet paper and envelope sizes which can be used. Please refer to the User guide manual for full information. You should select the paper size which will be used in the sheet feeder. <221> Orientation \[Orientation\] This function determines the direction in which the printer will print onto the paper. You must select either Portrait or Landscape. Portrait images are longer than broad and Landscape images are broader than long. <222> Left Margin \[Left Margin\] This determines the distance from the left edge of the paper where printing can begin. Unless you alter the left margin setting, the factory settings will automatically be selected. As the minimum text width is 10 print columns, the left margin setting should be set at least 10 columns less than that for the right margin. The setting range for the left margin is from 0-126. The units are columns at 1/10 of an inch. <223> Right Margin \[Right Margin\] This determines the distance from the left edge of the paper where printing finishes. Unless you alter the right margin setting, the factory settings will automatically be selected. As the minimum text width is 10 print columns, the right margin setting should be at least 10 columns larger than that for the left margin. The setting range for the right margin is from 10-136. The units are columns at 1/10 of an inch. <224> Top Margin \[Top Margin\] The top margin determines the distance from the top of the paper within which printing will not occur. <225> Bottom Margin \[Bottom Margin\] The bottom margin determines the distance from the bottom edge of the paper within which printing will not occur. <226> Lines/Page \[Lines/Page\] This determines the number of lines per page. The range is from 5-128 lines. <227> X Offset \[X Offset\] This allows the printed image to be offset in the horizontal (left/right) axis. The units are dots at 300dpi and adjustment can be made from -500 to +500 dots. A negative number will offset to the left and a positive number will offset to the right. This offset starts from the left margin. The factory setting is 0. i.e. No X offset. <228> Y Offset \[Y Offset\] This allows the printed image to be offset in the vertical (up/down) axis. The units are dots at 300dpi and the adjustment can be made from -500 to +500 dots. A negative number will offset upwards and a positive number will offset downwards. This offset starts from the top margin. The factory setting is 0. i.e. No Y offset. <229> Font Source \[Font Source\] This function allows you to select the desired font source. You can select from the internal font source and other available font sources. If any permanent fonts have been downloaded into the printer, the option of selecting these permanent fonts will also be available. <230> Font name, Pitch and Point \[Font Name, Pitch and Point\] This function enables you to select the font (typeface) to be used by the printer. In some cases the pitch (characters per inch) can be selected. This determines the spacing of the characters. The higher the selected pitch, the closer together the characters will appear when printed. In some cases the point size (height) of the character can be selected. The larger the selected point size, the taller the characters will appear when printed. <231> Symbol Set \[Symbol Set\] This function allows you to select the symbol set (specific character sets) from the options displayed. <232> Idle Font \[Idle Font\] You can select this function to ON or OFF. When a scalable font has been selected, the information from that scalable font actually creates a bitmapped font for printing. This usually occurs just before printing, and as it takes time to process the font, it therefore lengthens the time before the printer can print. If the idle font function is set to ON, the printer can create these bitmap fonts whilst it is idle, and therefore can print more quickly when data is received. However, this idle font function requires printer memory to be available. If MEMORY FULL occurs when the idle font function is set to ON, it is recommendable to set it to OFF or expand the memory using an optional memory board. <234> Continue Mode \[Continue Mode\] This function offers two options : Continue mode MANUAL or Continue mode AUTO. In some instances, when a printer error has occurred, the printer can override it. (This is called a recoverable error). If the setting is at AUTO, the printer will automatically attempt to override such an error and continue with the print job. If the setting is MANUAL, you can override a recoverable error by pressing the FF/Cont switch. (It is important to realize that though the error has been overridden, it has not been corrected and therefore the printed image may be incorrect) <235> Input Buffer \[Input Buffer\] The input buffer is the area within the printer memory allocated for receiving data from a computer. You can increase or decrease the input buffer capacity, according to your varying requirements. A larger input buffer capacity will allow the printer to receive data more quickly from the computer. This function is particularly useful to release your computer quickly from a printing job. <236> Auto I/F Time Out \[Auto I/F Time Out\] When data is received from a host computer (A), the printer will automatically set itself to receive data using interface (A). While data is being received via interface (A), data from another computer (B) cannot be received. After all the data from interface (A) has been received, there is a period of time during which NO DATA AT ALL can be received. Once this time has elapsed, data from interface (B) can be received by the printer. This time is the Auto I/F Time Out. This can be set within the range 1-99 seconds in units of 1 second. <237> Parallel High Speed \[Parallel High Speed\] In order to enhance parallel interface receiving capabilities, this function can be selected to VALID. If your computer can transfer print data at high speed and this function has been set to VALID, then the printer can receive the data more quickly. However, in some cases the computer cannot send high speed data to your printer. If this is the case the Parallel High Speed should be set to INVALID. <238> Auto Sleep \[Auto Sleep\] When this function is set to ON, the printer will be enabled to go into sleep mode after the time out period has elapsed. When the printer is in sleep mode, it is set at a low power consumption level. If this function is set to OFF, the printer will not be able to enter sleep mode and will constantly be at a standby power level. With Auto Sleep set to ON, the time out can be selected. <239> Auto Sleep Time Out \[Auto Sleep Time Out\] When the printer has not received any print data, and there are no key operations for a specified amount of time (default 15 or 2 minutes), it can be set to switch itself into a low power consumption mode. This setting specifies the length of time after which the auto sleep function will be enabled. This time is measured from the last time a page was printed or from the last time a key operation was made, and you can select the time out within the range of 1-99 minutes in units of 1 minute. <240> Auto LF \[Auto LF\] When this function is set ON, the printer will automatically implement a line feed for every carriage return code received. When set to OFF, the print position will simply return to the left margin. Some word processing packages require this function to be ON, otherwise printing will occur all on one line. Similarly some word processing packages require this function to be OFF, otherwise printing will occur double line spaced. By simply changing the setting, these problems will probably be rectified. <241> Auto CR \[Auto CR\] If this function is set ON, the printer will automatically implement an additional carriage return to the left margin whenever a line feed, form feed or vertical tab code is received. When set to OFF, the codes will simply move the print position down the page without affecting the horizontal positioning. <242> Auto Wrap \[Auto Wrap\] If Auto Wrap is set to ON, whenever the print position reaches the right margin, a carriage return and line feed are automatically added. If Auto Wrap is set to OFF, printing will continue at the right margin until a cursor positioning command is received. (e.g. carriage return, line feed, form feed etc.) <243> Auto Skip \[Auto Skip\] If Auto Skip is set to ON, the printer will automatically perform a form feed when the bottom margin of the paper has been reached. When Auto Skip is set to OFF, the printer will continue printing at the bottom margin of the page until a form feed command is received. Usually this should be set to ON. <244> Auto Mask \[Auto Mask\] When this function is set to ON, your settings for top and bottom margins of the printer are ignored and are treated as zero. You must select the paper length to 11 inches when using A4(International) or letter(US) size paper and set to 14 inches for legal(US) paper. When you are using application software set to IBM or EPSON emulation it is recommended to set this function to ON. <245> Print PS Errors \[Print PS Errors\] This function is only applicable when the printer is in the Br-Script mode. If you select this function to ON, in the event of a Postscript error occurring, an error report will automatically be printed out. <246> Economy Level \[Economy Level\] This function is only applicable when the Print Quality is set to ECONOMY. You can select the two levels of ECONOMY mode. 25% Toner Saving mode or 50% Toner Saving mode. 50% Toner Saving mode is more lighter printouts than 25% Toner Saving mode. <260> Send Settings \[Send Settings\] By selecting this function you send all the current settings you have made in this application to the printer. <261> Load Settings \[Load Settings\] By selecting this function you can select and load settings which have been previously saved. You will be offered a menu of settings file names from which you can select the file required. The settings in the file will then be loaded into this application. FILENAME.SET is the regular settings file which is ordinarily saved by > function, and FILENAME.PCM is the special settings file which is saved by > function. These files can be loaded in the same way by "load settings". <262> Save Settings \[Save Settings\] For specific applications you may require specific settings and therefore, in order to save time and prevent you from having to reset the settings each time, you can simply save the settings to a file and load them again the next time they are required. You simply select the Save Settings command, name the settings with a file name and these settings will be saved and stored for future use. <263> Save as command \[Save as Printer command stream\] This function enables you to save the current settings as a file in the same way as "Save Settings", but the settings are saved as a printer command stream. Therefore, you may use the settings file to directly control the printer. For example, you can send the file to the printer by using the DOS copy command to set up the printer. These settings files can also be called from an application that requires a printer initialization and/or termination string. This program enables you to prepare these files quickly and easily. The saved settings file is readable by "Load Settings". <264> Load Default \[Load Default\] By simply selecting this function you can restore the printer default settings. These settings are the factory settings stored in this program. <265> Reprint \[Reprint\] You can set reprint function valid or invalid. when this function valid, you can reprint the same page without sending it from the computer again by pressing FF/CONT key in off line status. <301> ENVIRONMENT \[Environment\] Within this function, you can select the settings for the general environment of this program. These settings are : > > <302> STATUS MONITOR CONFIG \[Status Monitor Config\] If the Status Monitor has been made resident in the computer memory, this main program automatically starts when it detects some changes such as error conditions selected in the wake up status settings; or you can start the program at any time by using the Hot-key, \+\+R. You can change the Hot- key or other starting up conditions from the Console Config menu of this program. The settings available within Status Monitor Config are : > > <310> Language \[Language\] You can choose the language in which this program information will be displayed. This setting will be available at the next wake- up of this program. <311> Printer Port \[Printer Port\] You can select the computer printer port to which the printer is connected. This setting will be available at the next wake- up of this program. <312> Buzzer \[Buzzer\] By selecting this function to ON, you will hear a buzzer sound from the computer whenever a printer error condition exists. An error condition can range from something as simple as the printer running out of paper, or something more complex such as a Service error. The computer will inform you of the nature of the error. If the buzzer is OFF, no aural indication will be given in the event of an error occurring. <313> Color \[Color\] Although there is limitation depending on the type of display screen you are using, if you want, you can select the message display window to be monochrome or Color by using this function <315> Hot Key \[Hot Key\] If the Status Monitor is resident, this function is available. Using the Hot Key combination, you can wake up this program and view the current printer status on your computer screen. The Hot Key default configuration is \, \ and R. However, this option allows you to change the Hot Key configuration according to your preference or to avoid a conflict with any other Hot Key combinations you may be using. To change the configuration, merely press the keys(up to three keys) you want to use on your keyboard, and then press RETURN to fix this setting. The Hot Key configuration will now be set to your choice. Alphabet keys or Function Keys (F3-F12) with \and \; Alphabet keys or Function Keys (F3-F12) with \ are valid for Hot Key. <316> Wakeup Status \[Wakeup Status\] You can select the printer status conditions which will wake up this program automatically and cause a printer message to be displayed on your computer screen. If you select a condition to ON, in the event of this situation occurring in the printer, then the relevant status message can be displayed on your computer screen.
